Programs on all aspects of Brazilian music in both classical and popular styles. Studies in performance, composition, music history and styles.


Institution Notes:

Founded in 1945 by Heitor Villa-Lobos, the main objective of this not-for-profit school is to train musicians and adherents by using Brazilian music in both classical and popular styles as the main material of study, thus aiming to rediscover for its supporters the musical traditions of Brazil. The Academy produces its own didactic material and issues a quarterly magazine ‘Brasiliana’. There is a Centre for research and discussion of Brazilian music and an archive of documents on Brazilian music. A number of CDs and publications have been issued, treating such topics as the Brazilian mandolin, the Brazilian guitar, aspects of Brazilian rhythm for percussion instruments. There is an extensive library of chamber and orchestral music available for hire.
