An independent classical music conservatory founded in 1920, with Ernest Bloch as its first director. The staff of the Institute includes over 40 members and retired members of the Cleveland Orchestra. It is an All-Steinway School where programs focus solely on classical music. A Joint Music Program is organised with the Case Western Reserve University, thus increasing the range of courses available to students at both institutions. The Cleveland Institute offers the programs in performance, composition, eurhythmics, theory, audio recording, piano accompanying and Suzuki pedagogy, while Case Western Reserve University offers the courses in music history, music education and the liberal arts. Facilities include some fine performing spaces and state-of-the-art electronic studios. A Feldenkrais program is available for students. There are Young Artist Programs for gifted pre-college students. The Preparatory and Continuing Education Division offers classes in Dalcroze eurhythmics, Suzuki studies, theory and performance for children and adults of the local community. Outreach programs are delivered through the Center for Innovative Musicianship whereby college and preparatory students organise and present programs at local schools, hospitals and retirement facilities. Member of the National Association of Schools of Music.
