This school is unique in that it is historically a traditional European Conservatory attached to a Comprehensive/Research State University. It can trace its history back to 1867. It is a ‘campus village’ comprising the Corbett Center for the Performing Arts, the Dieterle Vocal Arts Center, Memorial Hall and Mary Emery Hall. The College is an All-Steinway School. It consists of eight divisions: composition/theory/musicology, ensembles/conducting, keyboard studies, performance studies, opera/musical theatre/drama/arts administration, music education, electronic media, dance. The Gorno Memorial Music Library houses the Everett Helm Collection of rare books and music, the Anatole Chujoy Dance Collection, the Wurlitzer collection of rare 18th and 19th century chamber music, the Leigh Harline Collection of film and television music and the Thomas Cobbe Collection of Composer Portraits. A preparatory department offers tuition in performance, ensemble, theory, composition, theatre, dance and a Suzuki program to pre-college age students, general university students and adults. Member of the National Association of Schools of Music.
