Institution Notes:
A private liberal arts residential college for undergraduate women, and co-educational for graduate studies in education and music. It is affiliated with the Moravian Church and is one of the oldest fully accredited professional music schools in the USA, tracing its history back to 1766. The music program is housed in the Salem Fine Arts Center, with a recital hall, a concert hall and a drama workshop. There are five pipe organs in the building, including three tracker-action instruments built by Flentrop. The College also owns a large collection of harps for student use. The music library is building a collection of scores and recordings on women in music. There is emphasis on injury-preventive technique and hearing health in all vocal and keyboard studies. Cross-registration with Wake Forest University gives students a greater choice of ensemble groups. The College runs a Community Music School offering performance tuition (piano, organ, harp, flute, oboe, clarinet, violin, violoncello, guitar) to interested children and adults. An early childhood music program operates as well as Orff classes. There are Suzuki piano, violin and guitar classes. In 2021 Salem College announced that it was transitioning to preparing students in health leadership in keyboard playing, resulting in the unique Master of Music in Piano or Organ Pedagogy emphasizing ‘injury-preventive technique’. Member of the National Association of Schools of Music.
