Institution Notes:

Formerly known as the North Carolina School of the Arts, this institution gained its current name and status in 2008. It is organised into schools of dance, design and production, drama, film, music and visual arts. It forms part of the 16-campus university that makes up the University of North Carolina. The School has access to a number of fine performing spaces as well as to a state-of-the-art electronic studio. Performance students apprenticeship programs are available to selected students with the Western Piedmont Symphony Orchestra, the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra and the Piedmont Opera Theatre. The library holds a full set of the published compositions of Leonard Bernstein. In June and July the School of Music hosts a summer session with an intensive program of lessons, masterclasses, chamber music, ensembles and music theory. It also organises an annual European orchestral tour. There is a High School Music curriculum offering individual study to grades 9 to 12 students in preparation for tertiary music study. A Community Music School organised by the School of Music offers music instruction to children and interested adults, including Suzuki instruction for younger violin and guitar students.
