Institution Notes:

A state-supported university founded in 1891 and forming part of the 16-campus university that makes up the University of North Carolina. The School of Music is housed in a large purpose-built music building with access to several fine performing spaces. The Miles Davis jazz Studies Program offers studies in jazz and jazz performance. Opportunities are provided for advanced string students to audition for apprenticeships in the North Carolina and Greenbsoro Symphony Orchestras, such participation being integrated into their full-time studies. There is a full opera and musical theatre program as well as an award-winning University Wind Ensemble. The Music Research Institute focuses on research in the areas of music education, biomusic, music medicine, music-related hearing loss, music perception and cognition, neuromusical research, cognitively-impaired musicians, and music psychology. There is a significant collection of music and literature for the violoncello (scores, books, manuscripts and pedagogical materials) in the Jackson Library, which also holds the archives of the International Double Reed Society, the North American Saxophone Alliance, the College Music Society Southeastern Division, the Society of Composers, Inc, the Society for Music Teacher Education, and the International Tuba and Euphonium Association. The School of Music runs a Community Music School providing music tuition for children and interested adults. The Summer Music Camp for high school students is the largest university-sponsored music camp in the USA. The annual summer Piano Focus draws large numbers of national and international participants.
