The music department has strengths in musicology and theory/composition. The G Norman and Ruth G Eddy Collection of Music Instruments comprises over 500 late 18th, 19th and early 20th century instruments, with particular depth in woodwinds, brass and early pianos. There is also a collection of harpsichords, fortepianos and tracker organs. The Perkins Library holds the Alexander Weinmann Collection of 18th and 19th century Sheet Music. The Duke University String School offers tuition in stringed instruments to beginners and more advanced students as well as to interested members of the local community.
