The College, of Presbyterian heritage, can trace its history back to 1894. The music department organises an Appalachian music program for the preservation of the traditions of music and dance from the region. Instruction is given on some of the common Appalachian instruments (finger-picking guitar, fiddle, mandolin, banjo) and students participate in old-time string band and bluegrass ensembles. All students are required to work an on-campus job and undertake community service. The college owns an Indonesian gamelan and has a large collection of recordings of traditional Appalachian music.
