The Eastman School of Music was founded in 1921. Ensembles include three symphony orchestras, three choral groups, seven jazz ensembles, two wind ensembles, a student-run contemporary music ensemble (’Ossia’), Musica Nova (a contemporary ensemble), Collegium Musicum (early music), trombone choir, percussion ensemble, marimba ensemble, harp ensemble, horn choir, many chamber groups. The Institute for Music Leadership organises the Catherine Filene Shouse Arts Leadership Program which emphasizes entrepreneurial skills, communication skills, technology skills and music advocacy skills for graduate students. The program is intended to broaden students’ experiences in professional music activities. There are courses for professional orchestral musicians comprising areas such as artistic decision making, health issues for musicians, and the like. Active student exchange agreements operate with conservatoires in France, United Kingdom, Sweden, Germany, Austria and China. The Community Music School offers music tuition to interested members of the local community. It offers some 75 scholarships to promising city school students to study through the William Warfield Partnership program. A number of diplomas and certificates are available, including the Pre-College Diploma, the Adult Diploma, the Certificate of Advanced Achievement in Performance and the Certificate of Merit (for performance, jazz performance or theory). The Sibley Music Library holds vast collections of music literature and other original materials (manuscripts, letters, treatises), first and early editions of standard and not-so-standard repertoire, as well as performance scores. Special collections include the Ernest Bloch Collection, the Czerny Collection, the Percy Grainger Program Collection, the Kuhlau Collection, the Carl Nielsen Collection, the Kurt Weill Archives, a bibliography of pre-1800 music theory and a sheet music collection of some 75,000 items of popular, light classical and salon music of the late 18th, 19th and early 20th century. There is a recorded sound collection of more than 50,000 discs and tapes. Subscriptions to over 600 periodicals are current. Archival collections include the Isabel McNeill Carley Library of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association, and the archives of the international Horn Society, the International Trombone Association, the Music Publishers Association, the Music Theory Society of New York State, the New York State School Music Association, and the Society for Chamber Music in Rochester.
