Institution Notes:

Originally founded in 1916 as The David Mannes Music School, and following a number of name and location changes, this institution in 1989 joined The New School, a private research university in New York City as part of The New School's College of Performing Arts, alongside The New School for Drama and The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. Mannes School music students may choose studies from other divisions of the University to complete their degree requirements. There is a thriving opera program. Facilities include state-of-the-art recording and computer laboratories and access to some fine performance spaces. An Extension Division offers education and ensemble experience in classical or jazz styles to interested members of the community. The library holds the Salzedo Annotated Harp Collection of scores, the compositions of Leopold Mannes and the scores of the Sylvia Marlowe Harpsichord Collection.
