A private conservatory, one of the largest in USA, founded in 1917 and offering both classical and jazz training. There is a strong emphasis on opera. A cross-registration program is offered with Barnard College of Columbia University. The Pinchas Zukerman Performance Program offers a limited number of exceptionally gifted students of violin and viola a two-year program of private lessons and coachings. The Center for Music Entrepreneurship offers a one-semester course to acquaint students with how to promote themselves in their chosen music careers, and internships are arranged. In residence are the American String Quartet, the New York Wind Soloists and the New Music Consort. There are several fine performing spaces and four well-equipped electronic music studios with state-of-the-art computers, software, keyboards and other equipment for composition, recording, editing, sound design and performance. The School houses 165 Steinway pianos. The Preparatory Division offers Saturday classical and jazz music study, theory, aural skills and composition to talented elementary and high school students and young adults. An outreach program sends students to perform in hospitals, hospices, women’s and children’s shelters, medical centres and senior homes. There is also an arts-in-education program providing semester-long classroom residency programs in orchestral music, opera, musical theatre and jazz in schools. A four-week professional musical theatre summer workshop is held annually. Distance learning programs have been developed - The Global Conservatory provides students and teachers of professional-level programs with lessons, master classes, coaching and seminars in real time, while the Music Bridges program provides lessons and coaching to school students (K-12) and community groups. There is a foreign exchange program with the Royal College of Music in London, England and the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Stuttgart, Germany. An associate member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
