Institution Notes:
A private school founded in 1905. There are divisions of music, dance and drama. The emphasis throughout is on performance and the School has access to a number of fine performance spaces. An Institute of Jazz Studies was created in 2001. The Juilliard Opera Center trains opera singers. There is a Center for Innovation in the Arts which equips students with skills to compose and perform music using new technology, and offers hands-on experience with state of the art equipment. All students have access to Alexander Technique programs. The School is the home of the Juilliard String Quartet which works with a resident quartet fellowship, the American Brass Quintet and the New York Woodwind Quintet. Researchers are involved in building a collection of Music by Black Composers. There is an extensive library which houses books, scores, orchestral parts, recordings and videos as well as the School’s collection of orchestral instruments and a number of rare violins, violas and violoncellos. The Juilliard Manuscript Collection contains autograph manuscripts, sketches, engravers proofs and first editions of such works as the Beethoven Symphony No 9 (with annotations by the composer), the original manuscript of Beethoven’s Grosse Fugue in his arrangement for piano duet, and the last scene of Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro. An active Placement Office assists students in finding outside engagements. An exchange program operates with Columbia University and Barnard College whereby students from these schools can take performance studies at Juilliard. The Juilliard School organises an annual Dalcroze Institute where candidates may work toward the Certificate and License qualifications. Outreach programs: The School’s Music Advancement Program offers instrumental programs to African-American, Latino and Native American students from New York City schools on Saturdays. There is a Pre-College Division offering Saturday music tuition to elementary and secondary school students, and an Evening Division offering music tuition to adults. The Gluck Community Service Fellowship Program sends students into hospitals and nursing homes for performances. Public School Education Programs are offered to school children, bringing Juilliard students trained as artist-educators into public school classrooms on a weekly basis throughout the school year. In 2019 the Juilliard School opened a pre-college music school in Tianjin, China. Its Graduate Studies program will open later in 2020.
