Institution Notes:

The H L Miller Cantorial School and List College of Jewish Music of the Jewish Theological Seminary are two schools devoted to Jewish musical studies. List College was founded in 1886. Among other things it provides training for cantors (hazzanim) for the congregational service or as teachers of Jewish music as choral directors, composers or research scholars. The H L Miller Cantorial School awards the diploma of hazzan, and the College of Jewish Music awards the master’s degree in sacred music. Students enrol in both schools and are expected to complete the diploma program and Master of Sacred Music degree simultaneously, preferably within a five-year period. The Sabin Family Music Library of the Jewish Theological Seminary has a growing music collection of manuscripts, printed materials and recordings of both cantorial and general music.
