Institution Notes:

The College was founded in 1875, and is the oldest institution of higher Jewish education in USA. The School of Sacred Music was founded in 1948 to train men and women to be cantors for Jewish worship centres. At the Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music Cantorial Program studies are offered in two tracks: • emphasis on training in the traditional style, covering the whole liturgical year with practical application of the modes to the liturgy. • emphasis on music of the Reform Synagogue; study of the repertoire of the contemporary synagogue. Completion of the program leads to investiture as cantor (‘hazzan’). The School houses the Sacred Music Press which publishes classical music for the Jewish world, including the compositions and arrangements of the late Morris Barash, faculty member of the School of Sacred Music. The Press also produced a compact disc of a live concert held in New York on November 22, 1998 commemorating the 50th anniversary of the School of Sacred Music. The library contains a number of collections of compositions (synagogue and secular) of Jewish composers. Other centres of learning are in Cincinnati, Jerusalem and Los Angeles where a cantorial music program is offered in collaboration with the University of Southern California’s Department of Sacred Music in the Thornton School of Music.
