Institution Notes:

A private Ivy League university founded in 1754, being the oldest institute of higher learning in New York State. The music department was established by Edward MacDowell in 1896. Undergraduate music programs are taken at the affiliated Barnard College, Columbia Teachers’ College, the School of General Studies, and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Agreements with the Graduate Centre of the City University of New York and with New York University allow students to take selected courses at these institutions for credit. Particularly talented performance students may take courses at the Juilliard School. The Department of Music has a Center for Ethnomusicology located at 417 Dodge Hall, with a vast range of materials, including the Laura Boulton Collection of Traditional and Liturgical Music (field recordings from around the world), historical recordings of American folk music, contemporary and traditional Turkish music, video-taped documents of Spanish Flamenco music, East Asian, South Asian, Slavic and Central Asian, African, Latin American, Middle Eastern and Western European materials. There is a Center for Jazz Studies and a well-equipped computer music center. The music library is strong in the areas of historical musicology, music theory and ethnomusicology. There are some first and early editions of opera vocal scores as well as a substantial collection of manuscript scores and parts for the zarzuela repertory.
