Institution Notes:

This is the doctorate-granting graduate school of the City University of New York. It was founded in 1961. Students at the Center have access to state-of-the-art electronic music studios, to the Metropolitan Museum of Arts’ collection of some 4,000 musical instruments, and to the Music Division of the Library of the Performing Arts of the New York Public Library at the Lincoln Center. Under the umbrella of the Barry S Brook Center for Music Research and Documentation a number of national and international projects, publications and research centres have their headquarters at the Graduate Center: Repertoire International de Littérature Musicale (RILM), the Research Center for Musical Iconography (RCMI), the Pergolesi Research Centre, the International Alban Berg Society, the Traditional Japanese Music Society, the Foundation for Iberian Music, the Center for the Study of Free-Reed Instruments, and the Music in Gotham project, documenting the century of composing in America, 1820-1920. The Department has links with the Institute for Studies in American Music (Brooklyn College campus), and the Louis Armstrong Archive (Queens College campus). The Graduate School has sponsored the Pendragon Press French Opera Project (publication in facsimile of French seventeenth and eighteenth century operas) and the Garland Press Symphony Project (c. 60 volumes of eighteenth and early nineteenth century symphonies). It is also involved with the monumental UNESCO/International Music Council project ‘The Universe of Music: A History’ series, a project documenting the entire history of world music and now based at the Graduate Center. The City University of New York (CUNY) was founded in 1961. It consists of 20 Colleges at which music is offered in eleven.
