Institution Notes:

A privately-endowed Ivy League university founded in 1865. The first chair of musicology in an American university was created at Cornell in 1930. Master’s degrees are not considered terminal degrees at Cornell; they are earned during the programs leading to doctoral degrees. The University is the home of the Westfield Center for Historical Keyboard Studies, and issues a journal - Keyboard Perspectives. The Sidney Cox Library of Music and Dance holds a vast collection of periodicals, books, scores, sound and video recordings, a microfilm collection of early printed and manuscript sources (including early opera libretti and scores), eighteenth century keyboard and chamber music, an archive of American popular song 1850-1950, a collection of 17th and 18th century German hymnals and some medieval music manuscripts. An archive on the history of hip-hop and rap music including sound recordings, a photographic archive, textile art, books, magazines and over 500 original flyers is held in the Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections. There are several fine performance venues as well as five state-of-the-art digital music studios. Instrument collections include a number of organs, fortepianos, harpsichords, a Javanese gamelan, a drum ensemble from Ghana, six Philippine instrumental ensembles, North Indian tabla sets, Middle Eastern ensemble instruments and a steel pan band.
