Buffalo State College was established as a teachers’ college in 1871 and joined the State University of New York system in 1948. It is not to be confused with the University at Buffalo which is also part of SUNY. The State University of New York (SUNY) was founded in 1948 with the amalgamation of a number of universities and colleges throughout the State of New York, some of which can trace their history back to 1816.
