Institution Notes:
This federal university can trace its history back to 1839. It was founded under its present name in 1965. The School of Music runs a regular series of chamber music concerts given by professional musicians. There is an early music group giving performances using early instruments. A Contemporary Music Centre provides for research and composition of avant-garde music. There is a research centre that co-ordinates research in early Brazilian music and music education with an archive of eighteenth century manuscripts from Minas Gerais. Short courses are offered in popular music. The very large junior department caters for music education for young children from age 7, with studies in movement, singing games, elementary theory, aural training. In the second year the children choose an instrument which they continue till age 12. A second level of music study continues for a further five years, concurrently with secondary schooling.
