A state-supported university. Rutgers, with its three campuses – at Camden, New Brunswick and Newark, - was chartered in 1766. Its main campus is in New Brunswick. The Mason Gross School of the Arts, chartered in 1976, comprises divisions of dance, music, theater arts and visual arts, and has access to a number of fine performing spaces. Facilities include two well-equipped audio recording, sound generation, design and post-production studios. The Alexander Library’s special collections include manuscript copies of anthems and secular vocal works by Handel and early editions of most of his other compositions, a number of early American hymnals, a large collection of sheet music of American vocal pieces published up to the end of the Civil War and a twelfth century manuscript of medieval Christian liturgical chant. An exchange program exists with the Musikhochschule Köln (Germany). Rutgers Community Arts offers programs to interested members of the local community in the areas of art & design, dance, filmmaking, music, and musical theater.
