Institution Notes:

A state-supported university founded in 1929, its first classes being held in 1933. The Conservatory of Music consists of divisions of performance, composition, music theory and musicology, music education/music therapy and dance. The Conservatory's Impact Centre (Intermedia/Music Production And Computer Technology Center) is a highly advanced multimedia workshop and theatre at the heart of the Conservatory’s electronic music composition program. There are several fine performing spaces. The Conservatory’s Barr Institute for American Composition Studies specialises in the acquisition, care, preservation, use and promotion of materials relating to American composition since 1890 (excluding jazz styles). The music library holds a comprehensive collection of the manuscripts and memorabilia of Paul Creston, large collections of music of other American composers, the Kansas City Sheet Music Collection, as well as the Dexter Collection of sound recordings, photographs, magazines and books and music. It also houses the MARR Sound Archive - a collection of some 175,000 sound recordings (cylinders, transcription discs, instantaneous cut discs, open reel tapes, 78s, 45s, LPs, compact discs) and is particularly rich in its holdings of jazz recordings. The Middle America Opera Apprentice Program provides exceptional Master's or Doctoral degree singers with performing experience with the Lyric Opera of Kansas City. The Composers in the Schools Fellowship for composition students provides a strong nurturing relationship with the Kansas City community. A continuing education division provides music instruction (performance, Suzuki flute and violin, theory, dance) to young people and interested adults. Member of the National Association of Schools of Music.
