A state-supported university, founded in 1868 from a union of a number of unrelated colleges and schools. The music department collaborates with the Michigan Opera Theatre, the Chamber Music Society of Detroit and other cultural organisations. Through a partnership with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra a 'String Project@Wayne' is organised, offering instruction in stringed instruments to children in grades 3 to 5 in the local area. A Weekend School of Music is sponsored by the Southeast Michigan Arts Forum and offers instrumental and music theory classes at the music department for elementary, middle and high school students on Saturdays. The Sphinx Preparatory Music Institute is a tuition-free program offering classes to Detroit students in music history, music theory/ear training and instrumental performance for ten Saturdays during the fall and winter semesters, serving string, woodwind, brass, percussion and piano instrumentalists, ages 11 to 18. It is designed to address the needs of students who lack access to steady, balanced music training. The Institute of Music and Dance of the Centre for Creative Studies is affiliated with the university, and offers part-time courses including opera workshops.
