Institution Notes:

The Institute, founded in 1996, offers music graduates and other young artists (Belgian and foreign) the possibility of developing their artistic talents and ability and broadening their academic knowledge under the guidance of prominent guest lecturers. The program combines musical performance with relevant scientific research. The Institute organises seminars, study days, lectures, workshops, conventions and master classes. Each year an International Orpheus Academy for Music and Theory is held. The Institute publishes Writings of the Orpheus Institute, containing essays by guest professors who presented lectures at the Academy. In 2007 the Orpheus Research Centre in Performance Practice was established. For the four-year Doctoral program (docARTES, launched in 2004), the Orpheus Institute acts as an umbrella institution for all professional conservatories in Flanders which offer courses in music. Subjects of study are tailor-made to fit the interests of the students. It is designed for musician-researchers (performers, composers and the like) and is offered by a consortium of partner institutions in several European countries co-ordinated by the Orpheus Institute. The other participating institutions are: • Katholieke Universiteit Leuven Association, Leuven (Belgium); • University of Leuven and the Lemmensinstituut (Belgium); • Antwerp University Association, Antwerp (Belgium); • Royal Conservatoire Antwerp (Belgium); • Leiden University, Academy of Creative and Performing Arts (Netherlands); • Koninklijk Conservatorium voor Muziek en Dans (The Hague, Netherlands); • Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten (Netherlands). An active member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
