Institution Notes:

A private college for women founded in 1875. It becomes co-educational at graduate level. The music department is housed in Sage Hall and has access to a number of fine performance spaces. It owns a gamelan. Smith College is the nation’s largest liberal arts college for women. It is one of a five-college consortium which shares programs for the purpose of extending and enriching their collective educational resources. The other neighbouring colleges forming this five-college consortium are: Amherst College, Amherst; Hampshire College, Amherst; Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley; University of Massachusetts, Amherst. The five colleges share programs in ethnomusicology/world music and early music performance. There is a Five College PhD program, awarded by the University of Massachusetts. Member of the European League of Institutes of the Arts.
