Institution Notes:
A private school of music founded in 1915 to provide training in the French conservatoire style. In 2012 the school merged with Bard College Conservatory of Music and now offers programs in performance, chamber music, collaborative piano, composition, Dalcroze Eurhythmics, early music, modern American music and opera in what is known as the Catalyst Curriculum. The Longy School is fully accredited to award the Dalcroze Licence and the Dalcroze Certificate. Following the 2023 entry to the undergraduate program all Longy students will undertake the Bachelor of Music liberal arts credits at Emerson College in Boston through a joint program with Longy. All students participate in the Teaching Artist Program which involves students in the community music programs. Facilities include some fine performing spaces. The Balakar Music Library holds the Pearlman Collection of medieval, renaissance and baroque scores and musicological texts as well as the A Tillman Merritt Collection - a scholarly collection of books and scores covering all historical periods. There is a small collection of early keyboard instruments. The School sees its particular strengths as in solfège, Dalcroze, the graduate program in early music, opera and performance studies. It holds regular summer programs. Member of the National Association of Schools of Music.
