The Tanglewood Institute is the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Academy summer training program for Advanced Music Study. While not a teaching institution providing degrees, the Tanglewood Music Center holds regular one-, two-, four-, six- and eight-week summer courses for instrumentalists, conductors, chamber ensembles and composers. The Center draws upon the expertise of the staff of the Boston University School for the Arts and members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra to run its programs. Entry is by audition; those accepted are awarded Fellowships covering the cost of tuition and accommodation. The programs accept students from age 15. High school, college, postgraduate and amateur adult students may apply. Programs of health and wellness include yoga and Feldenkrais. Performance venues include the 5,000-seat Koussevitzky Music Shed, the 1,176-seat Ozawa Concert Hall, a 300-seat chamber music hall, Trinity Episcopal Church and numerous rehearsal spaces. There is an extensive library of recordings and scores.
