Institution Notes:

An independent school of music founded in 1867. Master's degree conductors may serve mini-apprenticeships with the Boston Pops and the Handel and Haydn Society. The Conservatory houses a Sonic Analysis laboratory. It also organises an Intercultural Institute with monthly workshops, performances by guest artists in a wide variety of musical traditions. The library holds a large collection of scores of chamber and contemporary music as well as manuscripts and early editions of the works of Boston composers. There are also audio recordings of all New England Conservatory concerts from 1969 as well as a vast collection of sound and video recordings. A preparatory school offers music training to children and pre-college students. The NEC Continuing Education program offers music tuition to interested members of the public. The Conservatory organises professional development workshops for teachers. Seven institutions in the Boston area have formed a Pro-Arts Consortium, allowing for some cross-registration and sharing of facilities with both students and faculty members: Berklee College of Music, Boston Conservatory at Berklee, Boston Architectural College, Emerson College, Massachusetts College of Art and Design, New England Conservatory, School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University.
