A private college founded in 1945, it aims to prepare students for a career in the contemporary music industry. Berklee Colllege is said to be the world’s largest independent college specialising in jazz and commercial music with studies in every style of contemporary music - jazz, rock, popular, contemporary classical and music from many parts of the world. The Boston Conservatory at Berklee is the classical division of the College (see separate entry). In both the College and the Conservatory much use is made of music technology and computer-assisted instruction. There are departments of music technology, professional education, professional performance and professional writing, as well as courses in Africana studies and an American roots music program. The College houses an extensive recording complex with state-of-the-art music production, engineering, scoring and editing laboratories. It has organised a Global Jazz Institute designed for gifted jazz musicians to explore creativity to the highest levels. Other programs are organised through the Interdisciplinary Arts Institute and the Mediterranean Music Institute. There are summer programs for high school students wishing to perfect their performance and/or composition skills. The ensemble library contains works by such composer/arrangers as Buddy Rich, Stevie Wonder, Chick Corea and Woody Herman. There is an annual Berklee Film Festival with sound tracks of original music composed, performed, recorded and synchronised by Berklee students. A new campus has been opened in Valencia, Spain. The Berklee International Network for Contemporary Music Education has been formed to promote the effectiveness and advance the value of contemporary music education internationally. Other members are L’Aula de Música Moderna i Jazz - Conservatori Liceu (Barcelona, Spain), Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music (Tel Aviv, Israel), Odeon ‘Filippos Nakas’ (Athens, Greece), Pop/Jazz Conservatory (Helsinki, Finland), the American School of Modern Music (Paris, France), Academia de Musica Fermatta (Mexico City, Mexico), Conservatorio Musical Souza Lima (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Instituto de Música Contemporánea (Universidad San Francisco de Quito, Ecuador), International College of Music (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia), Jazz and Rock Schule (Freiburg, Germany), Koyo Conservatory (Kobe, Japan), Music Academy International (Nancy, France), Newpark Music Centre (Dublin, Ireland), PAN School (Tokyo, Japan), Seoul Jazz Academy (Seoul, Korea).
