Institution Notes:

A private liberal arts institution, Hampshire College was founded in 1970. There are no pre-set majors, but courses are developed according to individual student interests. The main emphasis is on encouraging students to study, compose, perform and improvise in various genres. Facilities include well-equipped recording studios and computer music studios. Hampshire College forms part of a five-college consortium offering combined resources for the purpose of extending and enriching their collective educational scope. The other neighbouring colleges forming this five-college consortium are: Amherst College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, Northampton and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. The five colleges share programs in ethnomusicology/world music, early music performance theory and history topics. There is a Five College PhD program, awarded by the University of Massachusetts.
