Bachelor of Arts. Musicology studies include music history, musical acoustics and sonology, sociology of music and stage arts.
Master of Arts. In historical and systematic musicology, ethnomusicology, music psychology. Doctor of Arts: Music. Doctor of Philosophy.
The university was founded in 1817 and is currently one of the biggest Flemish universities. Language of instruction is Dutch. The Department library holds a vast collection of tapes and scores related to avant-garde music dating from the 1950s which is currently available in a digital archive at www.ipem.ugent.be. There is an Institute for Psychoacoustics and Electronic Music (IPEM) which is the research centre of the department of musicology, specialising in systematic musicology and music cognition. IPEM is not a teaching organisation. It was founded in 1963 as a joint venture between the Belgian Radio and Television broadcasting company and the University of Ghent and exists for the study of contemporary music with a particular interest in new musicological methods and scientific research in the area of psycho-acoustics, interactive multimedia technologies and their applications, the archiving and preserving of sound and research into emotions and expressions related to music. The Institute organises concerts, summer courses, symposia and publishes the Journal of New Music Research.
