Institution Notes:

A state-supported university that can trace its history back to 1856. It is the flagship campus of the Maryland University system. The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center houses a number of fine performance spaces and houses a state-of- the-art music technology laboratory. The music department sees its strengths as in piano, the voice/opera program, music education and ethnomusicology. This is an All-Steinway School. University music students may receive credit for participation in the community-based koto ensemble, and in the community African drumming group. Regular summer programs include the Marian Anderson Vocal Competition, the International Piano Festival and William Kapell Competition, and the National Orchestral Institute.
