The United States Naval Academy’s Music Department comprises several performing ensembles: the Naval Academy band, men’s and women’s glee clubs, a drum and bugle corps, pipes and drums, a gospel choir, Protestant and Catholic chapel choirs, and a musical theatre company. Each year these groups are featured in hundreds of performances, primarily in the United States, but with occasional performances abroad.
The United States Naval Academy was founded in 1845. It does not actively recruit candidates for musical programs at the Academy, but auditions reveal those with talent and past experience in music activities. The US Naval Academy Band in Annapolis is one of two premiere Navy Bands offering permanent-duty assignment to naval musicians. The Academy houses one of America’s most extensive libraries of male choral music.
