Institution Notes:
A private university whose history can be traced back to 1834. The music department was founded in 1909, and houses a number of fine performing spaces. A number of significant collections are held in the Maxwell Music Library, including the Hogan Jazz Archive (considered the largest in the world of taped interviews with jazz figures, recordings, sheet music, photographs, newsclippings, personal papers and memorabilia, union records of black and white musicians, with some emphasis on Dixieland); a large manuscript collection of Latin-American music; a significant collection of print music, photographs and memorabilia of Louisiana musicians (held in the Louisiana Division of the library). The Armistad Research Centre for ethnic minorities in North America holds materials on well-known black musicians.
