A state-supported university which can trace its history back to 1798. The School of Music was opened in 1932. It sponsors the University of Louisville Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition, the most valuable and prestigious international composition prize in the world. Past winners include such composers as Łutosławski, Ligeti, Penderecki, Takemitsu, John Adams, Simon Bainbridge and Harrison Birtwistle. The University is home to the Jamey Aebersold Jazz Studies Program. Facilities include state-of-the-art computer music studios available to students across the university to engage in such activities as audio synthesis, digital signal processing and audio recording and post-production. The library houses the Grawemeyer Collection of New Music, with almost 5,000 scores and recordings of works composed during the last two decades. It also has a large collection of Italian scores of the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The School of Music has strong associations with music organisations in the community, including the Louisville Orchestra, the Kentucky Opera and the Louisville Ballet. The Community Music Program offers instruction in performance, Suzuki strings and piano as well as a pre-college dance program to children and interested adults.
