Formerly known as the Minsk Conservatory, the Academy was founded in 1932 and is the leading music institution in Belarus. There is an opera studio, a school of modern musicology and a separate division of Belarusian music. Facilities include a well equipped music technology studio. Training courses for choreographers and musical theatre producers are offered, and the Department of Professional Refreshment is training and retraining teachers of special secondary arts colleges. The Academy participates in the organising of international and nation-wide music festivals and is the headquarters of national programs in scientific research into musicology, music education and music aesthetics. It holds the ethnomusicological phonoarchive of the traditional vocal and instrumental music of Belarus, with more than 1600 hours of recorded material, including a series of phonograph collections known as the ‘Audio Atlas of Traditional Musical Culture of Belarus’. Facilities include an opera studio, a music research laboratory and a music recording laboratory. Courses are taught in Belarus language. There is a branch in Mogilyov. An active member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
