Institution Notes:

A state-supported university founded in 1866. The music department sees one particular strength as in organ playing and church music. The Department of Music is housed in Murphy Hall, with a number of fine performing spaces. There is an opera program, an annual jazz festival and a Symposium of Contemporary Music. The School of Music offers a Master’s degree in carillon performance. The Archive of Recorded Sound has a substantial collection of recordings (c. 80,000) of jazz and opera.
