This state-supported university can trace its history back to 1863. It gained its current name and status in 1977. The music department is housed in Beach Music Hall. The adjoining Shepherd Music Center houses rehearsal rooms, a percussion studio and the digital audio recording centre. The music department organises an Academy of Music that offers music tuition to children and interested members of the local community. Member of the National Association of Schools of Music.
