This state-supported university, consistently ranked among the strongest professional music schools in the USA, is the flagship institution of the University of Illinois system. The university has campuses in Chicago, Urbana-Champaign and Springfield. The School of Music occupies several buildings around the campus. Current enrolment is around 700 students majoring in music education, composition/theory, musicology and performance. Facilities include a number of fine performance spaces. More than 1,300 concerts, recitals and special presentations are given annually both on and off campus. The School of Music houses the Robert E Brown Center for World Music. It organises a Computer Music Project, and has well-equipped experimental music studios and a jazz computer learning centre. The library holds renaissance archives, a hymn-tune index and the John Philip Sousa collection. It has the third largest public music library in North America.
