A private university founded in 1850 under the patronage of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and housing one of the oldest degree-granting music schools in the USA. There is an Institute for New Music. Facilities include six buildings, with 97 practice rooms, five computer/electronic-based studios, classrooms and laboratories and more than twelve fine performance venues. Master of Music orchestral string players are eligible for Chicago Symphony Orchestra/Civic Orchestra of Chicago Fellowships which provide full tuition and an opportunity to play in these orchestras. The Deering Music Library, a leader in library automation, holds more than 149,000 books, musical scores, journals and microfilms including a large collection of contemporary music. It houses a listening centre, a 60-station state-of-the-art facility, giving students access to more than 53,000 discs and tapes. Special collections include the Fritz Reiner Library, the John Cage Archives, the Ricordi Collection of nineteenth century music and the Foundation for Contemporary Performing Arts ‘Notation Collection’. The School of Music sponsors a Music Academy offering music instruction to children and interested adults in the local community. There is an exchange program with the Queensland Conservatorium of Music in Brisbane, Australia. Member of the National Association of Schools of Music.
