Institution Notes:

A private non-denominational university founded in 1890 by John D Rockefeller. The Department of music was founded in 1933. It is primarily a graduate school and a centre of research in music. Performance studies are not offered, but participation in performance may be taken as an extra-curricular activity. The University's Chicago Center for Contemporary Composition is an interdisciplinary environment for the creation, performance and study of new music. The CHIME Studio (Chicago Integrated Media Experimental Studio) is a creative space in the Music Department focusing on creativity in electronic music and its integration with other media. The new Reva and David Logan Center for Creative and Performing Arts has some fine performing spaces. There is a Center for Italian Opera Studies. The library is extensive, with holdings covering all areas. It also holds the Chicago Jazz Archive and the Rieboldt-Rosenwald Collection of German folk songs. Graduate students have access to the private Newberry Library in downtown Chicago with its fine collection of books and manuscripts on medieval and renaissance music history and theory, psalmody, the secular lyric and musical theatre. The music department owns a gamelan and a number of Middle Eastern instruments.
