Details:

Bachelor of Arts in Performing Arts. Music studies in performance, composition, theory, musicology, electronic music, music education (with choral conducting). Bachelor of Arts in Hawaiian Studies. An emphasis in performing arts includes studies in composition (setting of Hawaiian poems and prose), performance off modern Hawaiian song, performance of ancient Hawaiian chant, modern and ancient hula performance, history and development of Hawaiian music, performance traditions, music in Polynesia.


Institution Notes:

A state university founded in 1941 as Hawaii Vocational School. It gained its current name and status in 1970. The Department of Performing Arts offers programs in dance, drama and music, with a range of vocal and instrumental ensembles. Language of instruction is English. The College of Hawaiian language was established in 1997. It offers a program of Hawaiian cultural studies. The library holds a collection of CDs of Hawaiian music. Early year courses may be conducted in either English or Hawaiian. From year three all classes are in the Hawaiian language.
