Institution Notes:
The University can trace its history back to 1823. It gained its current name and status in 1947. The School of Music houses a Center for Music Research and a Center for Music of the Americas with focus on music of the peoples of north, south and central America and the Caribbean. It is home to the Florida State Opera. There is a large collection of ethnic instruments, used by students in the various world music ensembles. The University has organised the National Institute for Infant & Child Medical Music Therapy - a partnership between the University and Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare. This Institute is involved with the provision of music therapy treatment to premature infants and very young children. Member of the State University System of Florida.
