Institution Notes:

An independent university that can trace its history back to 1879. It gained its current name and status in 1957. The Hartt School, also founded in 1957, is housed in the Fuller Music Center and offers programs in music, dance and theatre. There is an Institute of Contemporary American Music and the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz. The School also operates the Mort and Irma Handel Performing Arts Centre and Lincoln Theater. There is an active opera program. Music education students have opportunities for an optional year either in a Kodály program in Hungary or in an Orff program in Mannheim (Germany). Facilities include several state-of-the-art technology studios and a set of Trinidadian steel pans. A preparatory division offers tuition in instrumental or vocal performance, ensemble and theory. The Hartt Community Division offers music training to children and interested members of the local community from birth to adulthood. Member of the National Association of Schools of Music.
