Institution Notes:
Yale University is a private Ivy League institution that can trace its history back to 1701. There are three music divisions, each with a separate entry: • The Department of Music, part of Yale College and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. • The School of Music. • The Institute of Sacred Music. The Institute of Sacred Music is an interdisciplinary graduate centre for the study of music, liturgy, literature and the arts. The Institute has links to both the Yale School of Music and the School of Divinity. Its programs are normally available to organists, singers and choral conductors though composers may also be considered. Students apply through the Institute to one of the degree programs in the School of Music or the Divinity School and fulfill all the degree requirements of that school. The Graduate Certificate of the Institute is awarded in addition to the school’s requirements, after completion of extra elective programs in music, divinity and/or other university courses. Programs emphasize choral conducting, organ and voice performance as well as church music and liturgical studies. The Institute has an extensive choral library as well as a number of fine organs, Steinway grand pianos and harpsichords available for student performance. It sponsors regular symposia on a variety of topics.
