Institution Notes:

The full name of this institution is 'Leopold Franzens University'. It can trace its history back to 1669. The Institute of Music Studies was founded in 1926. It has particular strengths in musical iconography, music of the Tyrol and the social history of European dance. There is a collection of recordings of traditional music of central Europe as well as an archive for Tyrolian music history and an archive of musical iconography. The Institute issues several regular musicological publications, including the organ symposium journal. It houses a gamelan Sunda and a small collection of southeast Asian instruments. There are links with the Universities of Music and Dramatic Arts in Vienna, Salzburg and Graz and with the Tiroler Konservatorium in Innsbruck.
