Institution Notes:

The university was founded in 1831 as a Methodist institution, and became completely independent in 1937. The Center for the Arts houses the departments of music, art and art history, dance, theatre and film. There are some fine performance spaces and well-equipped electronic studios. A world instrument collection includes the David Tudor collection of electronic musical instruments and instrumentation, a Javanese gamelan, Korean drums, Taiko drums, Chinese instruments, steel pans, angklungs, didjeridoos and South Indian percussion. A collection of scores and recordings of the Olin Library includes the World Music Archives. The Green Street Arts Center is a collaboration between Wesleyan University, the City of Middletown and the North End Action Team. It offers classes and workshops for children and adults in music, visual arts, dance, theatre, literary and media arts.
