Institution Notes:

A private Methodist-affiliated university, founded in 1851. The Conservatory of Music, founded in 1878, is the oldest in the USA west of the Mississippi and one of the two founding institutions for the study of music therapy. The Conservatory continues a conservatory tradition with a liberal arts framework, and cooperates with other schools of the university to provide a variety of programs. There are several fine performance spaces. A unique video micro-rehearsal program has been developed and is used particularly for the training of music education students. Hosted by the University of the Pacific since 2000, the Brubeck Institute was established with the mission of building on Dave Brubeck's legacy for the advancement of social issues including civil rights, environmental concerns, international relations and social justice. This agreement came to an end in December 2019 when the Institute parted company with the University by mutual agreement, with the Brubeck Archives and the Institute becoming separated from the university’s attachment. The University library's Holt-Atherton Special Collections houses the Brubeck Archive of letters, documents, recordings, manuscripts, photographs, printed programs and memorabilia. The Institute presents an annual Brubeck festival, an outreach program, a Pacific Summer Jazz Colony for a select group of talented high school jazz musicians, and a Brubeck fellowship program - a one- or two-year full scholarship program in jazz performance for five musicians aged 18 and 19 years. These comprise the Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet. An annual research travel grant of $1,500 is awarded to a student, professor or independent researcher for travel and lodging expenses incurred while visiting Stockton to carry out a research project involving the collection. Member of the National Association of Schools of Music.
