Institution Notes:

A private university situated on one of the largest campuses in the USA. It accepted its first students in 1891. The Department of Music, founded in 1947, houses a vast archive of recorded sound with some 300,000 recordings, including over 100,000 78 r.p.m. discs and a number of wax cylinders, while the Stanford Memorial Library of Music has an impressive collection of first editions and original manuscripts, including the Lully archive and manuscripts, printed scores and musical ephemera of, among others, Bach, Handel, Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Brahms, Wagner, Mascagni, Mahler and Stravinsky. The Department of Music houses the Doreen B. Townsend Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics which is also used by other departments within the university. The Harry R. Lange Historical Collection of rare stringed instruments and bows is available for use by appropriate persons. There is a Centre for Computer-Assisted Research in the Humanities, with a vast data-base of information for music research.
