Performance classes are held twice weekly, and include instruction on tabla, sitar, tanpura, sarod, violin, harmonium, flute, guitar and voice in the North Indian style.
Institution Notes:
The College began in 1956 in Calcutta, India, and commenced operations in California in 1967. It aims to spread knowledge and teach performance of the music of North India - Hindustani classical vocal and instrumental music - and for this purpose it also sponsors concerts of Indian classical music. One of the best selections of recorded classical Hindustani music in the USA is held at the college. Indian and other instruments are available for purchase at the College store. Although Ali Akbar College of Music offers no degrees or diplomas in music, it is possible to study at the College and arrange for credit from a number of American universities and colleges. There are regular concerts open to the public.
