This private conservatory was founded in 1917 and gained its current name and status in 1923. The Conservatory has strengths in chamber music, the production and performance of new music, and opera performance. Facilities include a number of fine performance spaces, a computer centre, a baroque studio and the state-of-the-art Wiegand Electronic Composition Studio. There is an attached Youth Music Education Centre offering a music education program to young people as well as a Certificate program for students preparing to begin the professional Bachelor's degree. An Adult Extension division offers programs for interested adults. In 2006 the Conservatory re-located to its new campus at the Civic Centre in the heart of San Francisco. It is a founding member of the Association of Professional Schools of Music. A community service program takes student performing groups into schools, hospitals, retirement homes and other places where people of limited means and mobility are not often reached. Conservatory students teach in local schools under the Conservatory in the Schools program. Member of the National Association of Schools of Music.
